Don't be scared of Linux, says Gartner

Businesses should embrace Linux or risk losing control over their IT infrastructure by driving the operating system underground. Andrew Butler, a research director at GartnerGroup, advises businesses to have an open Linux strategy.

Linux supercomputer howls

The University of New Mexico and IBM are teaming up to build the world's fastest Linux-based supercomputer. It's built from 64 of IBM Netfinity 256 servers. The servers are linked together using special clustering software and high-speed networking hardware, delivering a processing speed of 375 gigaflops, or 375 billion operations per second.

Silicon.com has uncovered growing concern that the Linux operating system suffers from major security problems that could prevent its widespread adoption in the enterprise environment. An investigation discovered widespread belief that the open source nature of the operating system allows hackers an easy route into Linux-based systems.

WordPerfect Office 2000 for Linux is now shipping

Corel Corporation announced its much anticipated WordPerfect Office 2000 for Linux is shipping on March 21st and will be on store shelves in early April. WordPerfect Office 2000 for Linux will be offered in both Standard and Deluxe Editions. Both editions will install on major Linux distributions, and are compatible with the Windows version of WordPerfect Office 2000 and Microsoft Office 2000.

Thinking outside the (server) box with Linux

Macmillan USA, announced Secure Server 7.0 for professional server administrators. Macmillan's new product is a secure Linux web server built within the new Linux-Mandrake 7.0 operating system. With Secure Server 7.0, managers of mid-level traffic web sites will have a secure server solution.
