It is a small world, after all. In keeping with the computer industry's drive to get portable, Linux is jumping into the Internet appliance and hand-held device market, with Lineo leading the charge.
Strength in Diversity
Concerns about the possible "fragmentation" of Linux are nothing new. However, they have recently been revived in several high-profile articles, and were the subject of a recent article here on Linux.com. Some IT analysts are predicting doom for Linux, with memories of Unix forks fresh in their minds. They claim that the existence of many distributions, each fighting for market share, will be the death of Linux. Personally, I believe that diversity is our greatest strength.
Red Hat reports fourth quarter results
Red Hat, Inc. (Nasdaq: RHAT), the leading provider of open source solutions for Internet infrastructure, today reported revenue of $13.1 million with adjusted Net Loss of $0.04 Per Share for the fourth quarter ended February 29, 2000, a 39% increase over revenue of $9.4 million for the fourth quarter last year.
Will Linux be a hit or miss on the corporate desktop?
So far this year, the buzz about Linux in enterprise networks has focused on servers and embedded systems, with the growth of Linux severs being most heralded. According to IDC, a research firm based in Framingham, Mass., Linux was the fastest-growing server operating system last year, with a 93% growth rate over the year before. Linux was the second most-shipped operating system in 1999 after Windows NT, capturing 24% of new licenses shipped.
