Legend (China) to produce Linux net devices

Chinese PC manufacturer Legend Computer said it will create Linux-based Net devices for the Asian market. The company said the devices, the first of which will be a set-top box, will use Legend's Happy Linux embedded operating system and Cyrus InterSoft's Speiros.

Aston Linux, a joint venture with the embedded Linux solutions company, Lineo, Inc. of the United States, is poised to advance into the world embedded market. Spearheaded by CTO Dr. Kim, Aston Linux is striving to develop an array of Linux-backed embedded solutions in such fields as internet applications, telecommunication devices and real time and high availability solutions.

NFS support in a Linux failover package

Mission Critical Linux recently released Version 1.2 of its Convolo Cluster server failover software for Linux. The highlight of the latest version of Convolo is its support of Network File System (NFS). According to the company, the new version now allows a Linux server running NFS to seamlessly failover to a back-up node, while maintaining the entire NFS configuration of file access privileges and support for NFS locking protocols.

Red Hat scores eCos win with Delphi

Red Hat scored a win for eCos on Monday by announcing a partnership with Delphi to provide the OS for Delphi's Mobile Productivity Centers. The MPC provides hands-free use of PDA's and an interface to cell phones in automobiles. While eCos is most definitely not Linux, the deal is a big advance for Open Source technologies in the embedded space, said Red Hat CTO Michael Tiemann.

Feds unveil 'security-enhanced' Linux prototype

The "enhanced-security Linux" code includes stronger protections against tampering and bypassing of application security mechanisms, as well as greater limits on damage that can be caused by malicious or flawed applications, according to the agency. But analyst Eric Hemmendinger at Aberdeen Group Inc. in Boston said he is leery that the open-source development community will want to embrace the NSA project.

Ballmer calls Linux top threat to Windows

Speaking at an Internet conference hosted by Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Steve Ballmer said that both Unix and Linux threaten Windows' stronghold in the marketplace, but that the latter is the bigger headache.

Here comes a Linux handheld computer

In what could be the world's first, Singapore's CWC and Ericsson Singapore have jointly developed a handheld computer that runs on Linux OS. Called DelphiPad, it's a PDA-lookalike that comes with a 10-inch touch-screen, weighs 1.3 kg, and is set to debut commercially in Q3 this year at below US$1,000.
