LinuxWorld\'s top stories of 2002

Maybe we\'re taking the whole recycling thing too far, but the LinuxWorld editors decided to do a little archive-diving for the most interesting, popular, controversial and recyclable Linux stories of 2002. As a year-end treat, we\'ve posted our list of standout stories here and added a few insights from the authors, as well.

Start-up beats IBM for Linux software

A revamped version of key disk drive management software in Linux will be based on a project from a start-up, spurring a retreat by IBM programmers who had been working on competing software.

Microsoft\'s Worst Enemy

After watching Microsoft closely for the last eighteen months or so, I\'ve got to disagree. Microsoft\'s biggest threat isn\'t Linux, OpenOffice, or any piece of software at all--its themselves. Over the last eighteen months two distinctly different Microsoft cultures have emerged, often in opposition to each other.

The open-source movement had a good year.

The Linux operating system and open-source software in general gained their first foothold on networked server computers in 2002, and emboldened advocates began a push to desktop computers as well.

Free Desktop for DOS based on linux kernel 2.0.0, glibc, xfree86 3.3.6, ncurses, dosemu, wine and twin, for run microsoft windows programs and dos programs, very similar to windows 98 funcionality, and run the windows drivers.

All system it´s setting in dos mode or in windows, and can be run with a disk boot.

FreeBSD 5.0 Developer Preview #2

The FreeBSD Project is proud to announce the availability of the second Developer Preview snapshot of FreeBSD 5.0 (5.0-DP2). This snapshot, intended for widespread testing purposes, is the latest milestone towards the eventual release of FreeBSD 5.0-RELEASE, currently scheduled for mid-December 2002.

Vanishing Features of the 2.6 Kernel

Many developers are eagerly awaiting the 2.6 Linux kernel. The feature freeze has passed, with a code freeze planned for January and final release slated for the second quarter of 2003. There is considerable excitement about anticipated enhancements, especially regarding scalability and performance.

LICQ does not stand for Linux ICQ. Never has and never will. LICQ is an ICQ for all (or most) *NIXes. Also Graham is no longer actively involved in the LICQ project. Jon Keating (jon@licq.org) is now the primary maintainer along with a slew of developers. LICQ now supports AOL ICQ V8 (OSCAR) protocol for the most part, and will work with KDE3.
