Installing a Linux server takes savvy

The Penguin, like most Linux (and Unix for that matter) hardware comes with rather skimpy documentation. Better is available online, but it will all take study. You don't just buy one of these and turn it on. Setting up a Windows NT server network is simpler. On the other hand, the Penguin with Linux is extremely reliable. Once you get things going, they won't need a lot of attention.

Dell's Linux-loaded laptop

Dell has released its first top-shelf laptop certified for Linux. Model CPxH500GT, part of the Latitude series of business laptops, runs Red Hat. When a top vendor starts including Linux laptops in one of its premier product lineups, it is a big step; Dell has also been fairly forward about bringing Linux to its full line of hardware.

ZDNet buys LinuxDevices.com

ZDNet has bought LinuxDevices.com for an undisclosed sum, but probably for less than finding enough knowledgeable, authorititive journalists to cover the embedded OS patch itself. In the press statement announcing the deal, Dan Rosenweig, ZDNet's president and CEO, makes a nod in the direction of editorial content - "Rick Lerbaum has created a killer site" - before getting down to the serious business of talking commerce.

Symantec Corporation, announced the availability of the most advanced virus detection and repair technology engineered to address the growing need for Linux-based virus protection. Norton AntiVirus now scans and analyzes files in the ELF file format -- the format used by the Linux platform.
